2 nights ago, at about 5:30 AM, a pack of wolves (the Golden Pack) serenaded us all with about a 20 minute session of howling. Dips and yips and swoops and yowls and moans. It was unearthly beautiful.
Then at 8:00 AM this morning, a wolf crossed the first bench across from Taylor and loped into the talus slope of the J. I saw it. This was the first time I've seen a wild wolf.
THEN someone hiked downstream a bit at about 8:30, and spooked FOUR wolves off a 5-point bull elk in the middle of the river. The wolves had attacked it and evicerated it in the river, but it was still alive. The person who found it had an elk tag, so after the wolves fled, he shot the elk and tagged it. We're headed downstream now to drag it out of the river and check it out.
Some days, my job rules SO HARD.
